Colostrum the New Collagen

It’s going to be full of information and full of fun! It’s so funny because recently when Ellison was born in April, my colostrum was coming in and both Ashley and I were like.. Wow.. too bad we can’t bottle this for ourselves! LOL!! We are a sister mess! For those who are first tuning in, we are sisters – I am an esthetician with over 13 years of experience and former spa owner and Ashley has been working by my side and is a research geek with a Masters plus 30 in Education. WE both love skin and healthy aging. I am 46 and Ashley is 48.Okay that’s a little background.

I did however pump and use my breastmilk on my face & neck for anti bacterial & anti aging benefits!

So, let’s start off with the basics of what is colostrum and what is collagen peptides and what we do.
Yes, I take Collagen peptides every morning in my coffee – 2 scoops! I Noticed a difference in my hair and nails within 6 weeks. I started doing this about 6 years ago and it is part of my morning routine. I also think it gives my coffee a creamy texture. Sometimes, when I need more protein, I would add it to my afternoon green tea latte.

So we are pretty well versed in Collagen Peptides but We both were so curious about Colostrum that we had to investigate! Because yeah, we do these podcasts for you but let’s not kid ourselves.. Ya know we also do them for ourselves – lol! WE love learning and we love skin and we love wellness stuff!

Colostrum and collagen peptides are both really popular supplements.

But they are DIFFERENT

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is essential for maintaining healthy skin, bones, and joints. It makes up 30% of your body’s protein, 80% of the protein in your bones, and 70% of the protein in your skin! Collagen is a protein found in the connective tissues of animals, including humans. This is so important because beginning at age 20 we start to lose collagen from our skin at 1% per year. If we do the math, then at age 50 you have lost 25% of your skin’s collagen. Losing Collagen causes sagging and wrinkled skin, brown spots, brittle hair and nails.
Collagen peptides are a form of collagen that has been broken down into smaller peptides through a process called hydrolysis. They do this because it makes the collagen more easily digestible and bioavailable, – that’s a fancy word meaning it can be more easily absorbed and utilized by the body.

Now I take Collagen peptides to help not only with my skin to improve its hydration and elasticity but also my joints, and bones. As Lindsey mentioned earlier – I put 2 scoops in my coffee in the morning. I get the unflavored kind so it doesn’t taste like anything. And I also like it because it has protein in it and supports bone mineral density and bone growth! Yay! And as you know, the older you get the more important protein is because we are losing bone. Protein plays a significant role in maintaining bone health because Protein is an essential nutrient for bone metabolism, bone formation, repair, and maintenance. You need enough protein so you can have greater bone density and you want this to avoid osteoporosis.

Honestly, I wish I could tell my 20 year old self this. I was just so concerned with being skinny that I was scared of protein and fat. Back then there wasn’t as much knowledge at your fingertips like there is today and I was on a low fat, low protein diet. I basically ate everything fat free. I remember when they came out with the fat free cookie that sold so fast you could never get them – This was in the 90s – They were called Snackwells! Do you remember those?
The flavors were Devils’ Food and Vanilla Cream – I remember I felt like I could eat as many as I wanted because they were fat free!
