When it comes to anti-aging, it’s about time we discussed hyaluronic acid, its advantages for our skin, and why an ingredient’s molecular weight matters! It is essential for helping us maintain our youthful appearance, to help combat drooping skin and wrinkles.
Hyaluronic Acid: What Is It?
Let’s start by defining hyaluronic acid. To begin with, it is a molecule that is naturally present in both the connective tissues and your skin. Our joints, nerves, hair, skin, and eyes all benefit from its lubricating and cushioning properties. It excels at preventing dry skin. Because hyaluronic acid is a moisture binder, it will bond to the water in the cells to make them plump. *Important tip* – Join our lapree beauty, anti-aging skin care community to see this important tip!
What Advantages Does Hyaluronic Acid have?
Moisturizing – it helps to replenish and retain moisture to leave you with plump and hydrated skin.
Wrinkles – it restores lost moisture and aids in minimizing the appearance of any fine lines since dry skin is one of the primary causes of wrinkles.
Quick Absorption – You lose less product since the skin is so fast to absorb it.
Available over the counter – check our skin store for the ones Lindsey and I use.
The miracle of hyaluronic acid: why? First off, hyaluronic acid has a 1000 times weight-to-weight water binding capacity! In order to keep your skin moisturized, it acts as a humectant, holding water molecules to the surface of your skin. Think of it this way, Hyaluronic acid can retain moisture in your skin by absorbing moisture from the air and holding nearly a thousand times its weight in water. It can therefore hang on to additional moisture making it a SUPER moisturizer!
When we speak to skin as being well-moisturized, we typically mean that it contains a lot of water. The abbreviation TEWL, or trans epidermal water loss, may be a word you are not familiar with. The amount of water that evaporates from the skin is measured using this phrase in science. When a product prevents TEWL, it implies it keeps your skin moisturized by preventing water from evaporating from the surface of your skin. In fact, hyaluronic acid accomplishes this by reducing the rate of water evaporation. This component is essential for rebuilding your skin’s moisture barrier because dehydration is one of the key causes of aging skin.
Which HA Products are Best to Use?
You will find hyaluronic acid in moisturizers, eye creams, sheet masks, cleansers, serums and lip masks.
There are 3 types of hyaluronic acid that you may find in your skin care products.
Sodium Hyaluronate – This is the salt form of hyaluronic acid. Salt is used as an ingredient because it makes it more stable and reduces oxidation. It also is at a lower molecular weight. Due to its lower weight, it can go deeper into the skin. Great for normal skin that needs moisture, but not too heavy.
Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid – This is for those with oily skin because it’s not as moisturizing. It is hyaluronic acid that has been broken down into smaller molecules so your skin can absorb it.
Sodium acetylated hyaluronate – This is a specialty form of sodium hyaluronate and has been called the super hyaluronic acid. This will retain the skin’s moisture and keep it hydrated for longer amounts of time. This is great for those with dry skin or who live in a dry climate.
