occasional breakouts mild acne

Today’s Spa Skin and Beauty podcast is focused on those occasional minor breakouts, hormonal acne, and mild acne. I don’t know about you, but it always seems that when I have some place I want to be or an event I am attending, I will have the occasional breakout during that time! So frustrating. Occasional breakouts, hormonal acne, and mild acne can be irritating and downright annoying. Especially as an adult! I see so many clients who are confused and embarrassed because they assume a breakout is for teenagers. So, what can we do, and why is this happening? Both Lindsey and Ashley are here to help you out!

What is causing your mild breakouts?

Before we begin treating your occasional breakouts, we need to get to the root of the problem so you can understand and possibly make some changes. These mild acne flare-ups can be a result of excessive stress, changes in hormones (pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause), makeup, medications, clothing, and even genetics. The key here is to treat these breakouts when they are mild. Otherwise, it can worsen and lead to other issues such as bigger pimples, spreading to other areas of your face, and, if serious, scarring.

The most common spots of adult acne appear on the jawline, around the mouth, neck, and chest area. This occurs because we have most of our sebaceous glands in these areas (sebaceous glands, in simplistic terms, are where our bodies produce our natural oils). When these glands get clogged, they can trap bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil. The result of this is seen in pimples, whiteheads (entirely blocked pores), or blackheads (partially blocked pores).

We have an all-about-acids article coming up! In that article, we discuss one of the acids named BHA. Beta-hydroxy acids are also chemical exfoliants and are oil-soluble. BHAs are different from AHAs as they are able to go deeper into your pores to not only remove buildup but also dry out excess oil otherwise known as sebum. BHAs do this by binding to your skin’s natural oils (sebum) to remove the excess sebum as well as remove the dead layers of cells that appear on the surface of your skin. This type of acid is really helpful for those with acne prone skin. Think of BHAs as useful for sun damage, acne, and rosacea.
